It should probably be noted to the first time home safe hunter that fire resistant safes are not built to properly save media (i.e. DVD, CD, Magnetic Media, etc) from fire damage. Magnetic media includes hard drives, magnetic strips on credit cards, cassettes, VHS tapes, or the like. If you plan to store this type of media from fire damage then a “media safe” is the answer.

Thank you so much for this blog and your efforts! I’ve been struggling to find good quality and independent analysis concerning such an important, complex, potentially costly purchase. I am Consumer Reports customer and a quick search of their online information doesn’t provide anything about security or fire resistant safes. The hard work by all contributors is appreciated.

I get that question a lot about Safes. There is a difference between “Which is the best safe” and “which is the best safe for me”

This looks like a great safe. I like that the rating is 1760º whereas most safes are measured in only 1200º. http://www.ftknox.com has a gun safe that is measured at 1680º for 90 minutes so I’m not sure how this safe compares for fireproof ratings.
